Meanwhile, across town in Lake Mary, the owner of the upscale Salon Ratay was leading her team of stylists in a very personal, very hands-on mission — giving makeovers to four survivors of domestic violence.

Ratay’s crew arrived by 7:30 a.m. and devoted most of the morning to cutting, coloring and highlighting hair and waxing eyebrows for the women, who are all current residents of Harbor House, the domestic violence shelter. Some of the women had never had such pampering in their lives.

“To get hugs from those ladies at the end – it’s just amazing,” said Sherry Ratay, who opened the boutique salon six years ago. “You know, they come in with their self-esteem so beaten down, but they leave with a whole different spirit.”

It’s not the first time Ratay and her staff have donated their time and talent, either. They’ve done makeovers for women undergoing breast-cancer treatment, arranged a fundraising cut-a-thon for a lung-transplant patient, and six months ago they did their first Harbor House makeover.

One woman studied herself in the mirror afterwards and began to cry in gratitude. “I’ve never looked like a girl before,” she said.

That’s when Ratay pledged to offer the makeovers to Harbor House residents twice a year from then on.

In all, the salon sacrificed about $650 in labor to help the women for free Tuesday, but Ratay figured it was worth every penny.

“Seeing how grateful they are inspires us,” she said. “It gives us all a check of reality.”

Sherry started with a natural level 5 in the back and nape, and floated to a natural level 7-8 in the front frame. She first began with using Joico Base Breaker and 20 volume develop for 10 minutes, cleansed and dried. Next she saturated the hair with Minardi Pre-wash and put under heat for 10 minutes, cleansed and dried. Sherry began in the nape area alternating Vero-lights with 20 volume and Joico Chrome B7 with activator….looking to see where she needed to enhance or erase. Working around the front hairline, she created more light running through by doing a few that were back to back slices and utilizing her low lite formula within. She lifted to a pale yellow, cleansed and dried. Next Sherry glazed the entire head with 1oz of G9, 1oz of clear, and activator, processed for 10 minutes. Finally the hair was cleansed and styled.

Starting at a natural level 4, Sherry first began with applying Joico Chrome2oz of RB4 and activator to regrowth and pulled down the shaft of the hair varying 4-6 inches, creating a rich velvety rooty brunette. She then began the American Baliage with Joico Vero-Lights and 20 volume, starting in the nape and working up and forward, lifting to a yellow/orange stage. She then applied Vero K-Pak “HLG” High Lift Golden Blonde with 40 volume In-between the foils only on the last 3-5 inches of the hair strand to create warmth running through the ends, processed for 35 minutes. Next the hair was cleansed and dried. Sherry glazed the entire head with Joico Chrome 1oz of B7 & 1oz of B9, and activator, processed for 10 minutes. She cleansed and styled the hair for the finished look.

Tips for Fabulous Fall Hair

With every new season comes new hair care concerns. Summer hair was easy and messy, but with fall amongst us, there are THREE key things to remember: static, dehydration and the drop in temperature all play a role in how our hair looks. Keep your do looking great despite the elements with these simple tips!

Static

Try shampoos that don't contain harsh chemicals.
Serums are great, but be careful not to use too much, they can weigh hair down.
Lightly spritz a bit of hairspray to tame any unwanted frizz.

Dehydration

Rinse your hair with cold water to help lock in your moisture.
Use leave-in moisturizers or conditioners.
Make time for weekly moisture treatments.
Try to limit the amount of times you use mechanical styling tools like curling and straightening irons.

Cold weather

Make sure you don't leave the house with damp or wet hair. Not only will you run the risk of getting a nasty cold, but you'll also increase your chances of getting some unwanted hair breakage.
Wear a scarf or hat to protect your hair from the wind.

Premier Beauty Classic: Taking Beauty to the Next Level

2011 Emmy Awards Best Hairstyles!

The low chignon was definitely the style to try for the 2011 Emmy Awards! Classic chignon hairstyles were donned everywhere by A-list actresses such as Rashida Jones, Minka Kelly, and Dianna Argon. Want to get the same chic look? Follow my easy instructions below for a classic chignon style!

Things you will need:

Covered hair band/elastic
Hair spray
Hair pins or grips to match your hair color
A paddle brush (always gives the smoothest results)
Pin-tail comb (I prefer using a metal tail comb but a plastic tail comb will do)

Directions

1. Using a paddle brush, smooth your hair straight back

2. Gather at the nape of your neck into a low ponytail using your covered hair band

3. Split your ponytail in half

4. Use your comb to tease the two sections of hair you split

5. Take one of the sections and smooth out with the paddle brush

6. Twist under and secure with a large bobby pin

7. Repeat Step 5 & 6 with the other section

8. Smooth down stray hairs with a toothbrush

9. Hairspray

***For fine hair, try teasing lightly and smoothing before placing into low ponytail.

I am excited to share with you all that I will be taking the center stage at two of the country’s largest beauty industry conventions, the upcoming Premiere Beauty Classic in Columbus, Ohio, and the Image Expo in Houston, Texas.

I'm thrilled and honored to be a part of these amazing events. It is my passion within that keeps me on the edge of what is new with hair color, and I am looking forward to sharing with other colorists what I truly love to do!

The Premiere Beauty Classic 2011 will take place on October 23 and 24 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Recently I sat down and decoded some celebrity hues so that we can all enjoy these phenomenal shades. Here are the how-to's to acheive certain desired colors:

Bryce Dallas Howard’s Rich Velvety Red
Natural Level: 6
Formula A: Redken Color Fusion 1 oz. 5Cr + 1 oz. 7Cc + 2 oz. 20 volume developer. Apply to new growth.
Formula B: Redken Shades EQ Cover Plus 2 oz. 6Cc + 20 volume developer.
Formula C: Shades EQ Cream 2 oz. 05Rr + 10 volume developer. Alternate Formula B and C on midlengths and ends, using the American Baliage technique. Process, shampoo and dry the hair.
Formula D: Redken Shades EQ 2 oz. 07C + 1 oz. 07CB + 3 oz. Processing Solution. Glaze all strands and process 20 minutes.

Cameron Diaz’s “Bad Teacher” Blonde

Natural Level: 5 ½
Formula A: Redken Blonde Icing Conditioning Cream Lightener + 30 volume developer
Formula B: Redken Double Fusion Blondes 12 Av + 20 volume developer
Apply Formula A and lift to pale yellow. At the same time, create delicate slices with Formula B, beginning in the nape area and concentrating on midlengths and ends for a delicate ombre effect. Process, shampoo and dry the hair.
Formula C: Redken Shades EQ 1 oz. 09N + 1 oz. 09G + 2 oz. Processing Solution. Glaze all strands, process for 10 minutes.

Giada de Laurentiis’ Sunny Highlights

Natural Level: 4 with 20% gray
Formula A: Joico Vero K-PAK color 7A + 20-volume developer.
Formula B: Joico Verolight + 20-volume developer
Formula C: Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome B6 + Activator
Formula D: Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome G8 + Activator
Apply Formula A to new growth. Create slice highlights, focusing on the face frame area with Formula B. Lift highlights to yellow and tone with Formula C. Process, shampoo and dry the hair and glaze all strands with Formula D.

Megan Fox’s Rich Brunette

Natural/Existing Levels: 4 with 6-7 on the ends.
Formula A: Wella Color Touch 2 oz. 4/0 + 3 oz. 1.9% developer. Apply to regrowth and extend 6-8 inches down the hairshaft. Vary the application end point slightly throughout the head.
Formula B: Wella Color Touch 2 oz. 4/0 + 2 oz. 6/77 + 1.9% developer. Apply to ends. (Be sure all hair is thoroughly saturated.) Process with heat for 15 minutes; cool for 10 minutes at room temperature.

Once again the spotlight is on Kim Kardashian! The hot, trendy celebrity who has been known for her beautiful and rich dark mane, has recently changed her hair color back to a beachy summer blonde. This happened just days after blogging about how she missed her blonde hair. You can get the same look by following the steps below.

Kim's hair is naturally a very dark brown. In order to achieve a beachy summer blonde look we MUST:

First, begin with lightening the overall hair color to a light brown.
Next, we can create lighter and brighter pieces throughout the head - the goal is to create soft pieces running through, NOT RIBBONS of blonde.
Lift the hair strand to an orange/yellow stage
Glaze with a demi-permanent hair color to lock in the desired soft golden shade, as well as seal the hair shaft to create shine to the hair fiber.
Shampoo, condition, and style!

At Salon Ratay, we treat the hair from the inside-out when creating these looks. We like to start with a Kerastase Vita-Ciment treatment pre-color, then use Minardi Pre-Wash and finish with Kerastase pixelist for shine and nourishment.

***VERY IMPORTANT! This is only the first part of creating blonde hair on olive skin tones. In 4-6 weeks, repeat the service but create lighter and brighter pieces in the opposite direction from those you previously did.

Getting your hair colored should be more than just sitting on the chair and praying that the colorist understands what you want. Here’s what you should look for in your next hair color professional:

· Consultation time. Dialogue is a must! Whether this is a first-timer or life-long customer, an eye-to-eye sit down is a must.

· Consideration. Budget, availability and lifestyle (5 kids, husband, dog and bunny to take care of) should be taken into consideration before suggesting to a brunette a full head of blonde highlights requiring religious salon visits!

· Open Forum. Hair colorist must open a space for clients to voice questions, concerns, hair issues.

· Honesty. The hair colorist must listen to what the client wants, but also needs to step up as a professional/expert and educate.

Premiere Orlando International Beauty Event

This past weekend I attended the Premiere Orlando International Beauty Event. Premiere Beauty Show is one of the biggest beauty industry trade shows in the country, and it took place right in my backyard, at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando! I had the pleasure of working with Beth Minardi coloring collections of blondes, brunettes, and redheads. It was wonderful to spend the weekend with one of my mentors in the beauty industry and to be able to collect thoughts about the Joico Haircolor lines Vero K-pak color and Vero K-pak Chrome. Thank you to those who helped celebrate Salon Ratay's 5th anniversary on Saturday, May 21st!! There was an amazing turn out, including family and friends who came out to show their support for the salon.

It was a fantastic evening filled with fashion, music and beautiful hair. Special events throughout the night included a silent auction, fashion show presented by designer Kesi Case and a live performance by Italian singer Franco Corso. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvers were served to add to the celebration.

It's more important than ever to put the right hair color into your career because hair color could mean the difference of several rungs up the corporate ladder.

Career women today need to pay as much attention to color as they do to how they dress and groom themselves.

No matter what stage in a woman’s career, hair color can work with or against her. Unfortunately, there is still a gender imbalance in the work place, with women still under-represented in high-powered positions. For that and many other reasons, it is important to be aware of how they portray themselves in the corporate world.

Hair coloring tips for women in the workplace:

· For women graduating college, leave behind the bleached-blonde locks and stripy highlights and opt for a more subtle shade. Think blonde on blonde shade, like Jennifer Aniston.

· Take in consideration your budget, availability and lifestyle. For those with limited time and budget, I suggest a low-maintenance technique I call Butterflies, where I create beautiful color through mid-lengths and ends, like Eva Longoria.

Today, the world stopped to see Prince William and Kate Middleton,
now officially The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tie the knot!

Westminster Abbey looked beautiful and the whole planet watched the most special day in the lives of the handsome groom and his breathtaking bride.

Catherine Middleton’s wedding gown (which I loved!) was designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen.

When I heard news of the most talked about bride of the century doing her own makeup, I was a bit surprised! Any makeup artist would have been honored and privileged to do her makeup, but she decided to go about it on her own - and I applaud her! She kept her makeup simple, elegant, and traditional.

As for her hair, I found it to be absolutely perfect!

As with any royal festivity, theirs was a very traditional and classic event..
Afterall, the whole world was and still is watching!

Hairstyles That Work for Every Face Shape

Let’s look at the 3 top face shapes:

· Oblong

· Square

· Oval

As well as the three proportions of your face:

· Top of forehead to eyebrows

· Eyebrows to tip of nose

· Tip of the nose to the bottom of chin

The ideal look is to create balance within the face shape and face proportions.

· If you have an oblong face shape and the chin is the predominant area, create soft layers and when coloring the hair, do not add extra lightness or darkness. Simply create soft dimensional haircolor around the chin. If the predominant area is the forehead, go for bangs -either full bangs or shattered bangs - as well as creating a darker reflection of color underneath the bangs.

· If your face shape if square you want to create soft diagonal lines in the forehead and chin areas. Always take into consideration your hair fiber is like a delicate piece of fabric - Treat it as a piece of linen and not a pair of jeans!

Always use a gentle and repairing shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. Repairing the lipid in the hair is crucial (lipids are the natural elasticity in the hair fiber, if you remove that elasticity you will create split ends)

I believe every woman and man should “Experience Life with Color,” whether to cover grays, brighten blondes, richen brunettes, or create the glisten to redheads.

To create beautiful haircolor, I ALWAYS begin by analyzing my guest's skin tone, eye color, and of course the existing hair color.

If the hair fiber has been overly processed, then your options are minimized to what you can create on that day of service; it is VITAL that you treat the hair before you start your service. The hair is made up of many different components but primarily protein and some moisture, if you do not add those vital steps to your coloring, your creation on the hair could turn out unexpected, for example…Dark, Drab, Flat, and just not PRETTY.

BRUNETTES: When coloring Brunettes, I like to create what I call Brown on Brown shades. For example, the color of coffee and cream, absolutely stunning!

BLONDES: You can always tell if someone was a “Toe Head” blonde baby (I like to call it pastel blonde) by their eye color: CRYSTAL blue! If they have specks of amber color around their pupil then don’t attempt to make them a “Pastel Blonde.” They should stay within the shades of sand on the beach, very creamy.

Now here’s my favorite, RED HEADS: Keep in mind the right skin tone and eye color for redheads... Peachy skin tone and amber eye color is the perfect canvas to create medium to light amber ribbons in the hair. Green/blue eye color is wonderful for vibrant copper colors. When creating a cool redhead we want to look for olive skin tone, minimal freckles, and dark eye color. Such an exquisite haircolor that not too many people can pull off, but if done on the right canvas it’s absolutely stunning. For example, see the rich vibrant shades like Juliana Moore in the fall of 2010 or light amber shades like Nicole Kidman's in 2011.
